I woke up this morning to a chessboard fight poster with Haney and Lomachenko squaring off on amid chess pieces. The undisputed lightweight title bout has been a long time coming and the chess analogy is a great advertisement of two very skilled and intelligent fighters. Haney was chasing Lomachenko a few years ago when Vasily was the WBC champion at lightweight and Haney was notified via email that he became champion when their fight could not materialize. Haney became the subject of abuse for that status while Lomachenko was largely forgiven for the fight not materializing. Lomachenko continued to get big fights while Haney struggled to get the big names in the ring like Teofimo Lopez. Haney finally unified all titles at 135 lbs. when he defeated George Kambosos in his backyard and repeated the feat again. These two competitors will meet in a battle of old vs young and last hurrah vs just getting started. I look to do a full preview here closer to fight time but wanted to make an announcement here.
Initial thought: Haney by unanimous decision.
