A Case for Yordenis Ugas: End the Stalemate at Welterweight

I am pulling for Yordenis Ugas in this weekends upcoming welterweight unification clash against Errol Spence Jr. This is the big one fight fans, three titles on the line, pay-per-view, in a major venue. No its not the Spence vs Terrence Crawford fight fight fans have been clamoring for over the last several years but the best we can get. Besides the fact that I am a die hard Yordenis Ugas fan there are reasons for you as a boxing fan should be pulling for the WBA champion from Cuba. With a less than perfect 27-4 record Ugas lost back to back decisions and sat out two years before coming back. Since that comeback he has been 12-1 taking on fighters like Manny Pacquiao, Shawn Porter, Thomas Dulorme, Bryant Perrella and Jamal James. I felt he beat Porter and thus should be 13-0 and have held the WBC title and all of the accolades that came with it sooner. Instead he showed great resolve in coming back and fighting Manny Pacquiao on short notice and stealing the show. He has been rewarded for this willingness to take chances with a fight with 27-0 Errol Spence for three championship titles.

Errol Spence Jr is largely viewed as a the man at welterweight but his biggest foe has been a man he has had ample time to fight and has not fought. I am tired of waiting for Spence and Crawford to get in the ring and fight each other and this is getting old. Pacquiao and Mayweather dangled the big fight in our faces for years as we shelled out for less PPV fights thinking the big one is next. Juan Manuel Marquez flipped the script and we finally got the fight we really wanted. Spence and Crawford need to be knocked back to reality so we can finally get the fight that should have been made long ago. For that reason I am especially pulling for the Ugas upset, because he has shown he is ready, willing and able to get in there with anyone. He has nothing to lose and has climbed the ranks in a way consistent with that mindset. If Ugas can do what most feel he cannot I believe he will double down and go for Crawford. If Spence wins this fight as he is expected to I am not convinced the Crawford fight happens.

Agree, disagree I think Ugas scoring the win here breathes new life into the division.
