Mauricio Lara Is Here To Stay

The twenty-four year-old from Mexico known as the Bronco is not a flash in the pan. This kid flew onto the scene KO’ing unified featherweight champion Josh Warrington in the UK last year in a non title fight in a KO of the Year and Upset of the Year type of win. Unfortunately the rematch ended in a no contest when their heads came together and ended it before they got started. Sometimes when a fighter comes out of nowhere and blasts an established fighter there is a long history of flukes and the winner loses the rematch or a follow up fight and goes into obscurity. Lara showed he is dangerous with a KO in the third round against 19-1 Emilio Sanchez this past Saturday. Much like the Warrington fight this was another KO of the Year type of punch and Sanchez was completely leveled.

I think we should all be left with the opinion that this kid is a murderous puncher and a threat to anyone in an interesting division. Lara shocked Warrington and Leigh Wood who fights tonight defeated China’s Xu Can to secure a WBA title at Featherweight so this is a very interesting moment in the division. Long time title holder Gary Russell Jr was upset by Mark Magasayo and Kiko Martinez stopped Kid Galahad in six rounds in another fantastic upset. Warrington looks to face Martinez for the IBF title and a third try against Lara might be on tap. With UK familiarity he could always fight tonight’s winner in the Conlan-Wood fight. Emmanuel Navarrete is another option in an all Mexico scrap of devastating punchers. So look forward to more!
